      The 13 papers that comprise this book were originally presented at the Rutgers University Conference on Japanese Women Writers in Stimulating essays discuss issues such as gender and criticism, concepts and origins of women’s literature, female resistance through writing, cultural meanings of “woman,” and power and gender. How does a reviewer describe the value of a book such as Far Beyond the Field?There are so many levels on which it must be praised! The Preface to this book calls it a collection of four hundred haiku by twenty Japanese poets spanning three and a half centuries, and so it is, but that is only the surface of the purposes and uses of this book.

        Thankfully, of late, a number of female writers have stepped out from the Murakami shadow and into English translation. Long acclaimed in Japan, they arrive here festooned with prizes and critical.
